"Finding the folktales, fables, and philosophies behind your favorite films"
Welcome to the home of The Story Cauldron, a weekly podcast that explores the stories behind your favorite cinematic stories. Join us every Wednesday as we dive into what Tolkien called the "Cauldron of Story" to see where our movies come from.
The Story Cauldron is a podcast about movies and "sub-creation," something that J.R.R. Tolkien called the final result of Imagination + Art.
No story is an island entire of itself; each one depends on tales already told for foundation and support. Often (though not always) done unconsciously, the story-tellers of every age recombine past history, mythology, devices, and tropes to bring new legends to life; Tolkien described this as the great cultural "Soup" out of which each storytelling "Chef" ladles a new narrative.
We're here to drink up and explore the stories behind the cinematic stories we love.
Meet the Hosts
THE PHILOSOPHY GUY
With degrees in anthropology and philosophy, I've spent a lot of money reading books you can find for free in a library. Happily married father of three. A Tolkien nut with irrationally strong opinions about superheroes, theology, and coffee.
Top Films: Children of Men, Jurassic Park, The Princess Bride, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Serenity
THE MOVIE DUDE
"With a degree In Mass Communication and Broadcast Journalism, this English and Film teacher learned at a young age what goes into crafting a good story while trying to explain to my parents why the garbage wasn’t out yet. Newly engaged, and a movie fanatic, I get excited around all types of quality consumables, be it podcast, film, food or beverage form."
Top Films: Field of Dreams, Casablanca, Twister, Jurassic Park, Die Hard
Currently a student working on his undergrad, this Gilmore Girls fanatic spends his days watching Netflix, playing piano, and most likely spending money on old books, sheet music, and records. Still in the process of winning the county pie contest.
UPDATE: County Pie Contest Level - Passed
